Before I start wasting my time looking for something that is built in from the factory, can anyone point me in the right direction to trace a noise on my iltis?
under load, in 2WD I get what can only be described as a "jangling" noise, putting it in 4WD or changing down usually cures it.
If it was a T3 syncro i would say that it was the worn phosphor bronze bush in the propshaft, but it isn't!
I have packed the CV joints with fresh grease already.
Any clues to common problems before I start jacking it up?
I would say it is prop (cardan) shaft or rear differential related but it's hard to have your head underneath while going down the road!

i had to look that word up:
"to make a harsh metallic sound"
the way you tread your iltis, i would say it's the entry bearing in the diff
thats quite common
if you take out the cardan shaft, it probably will be gone...
so, i bet you killed your diff...
btw the sound will get much louder if you keep on riding it for a while

No movement and has always been there, I'll double check.
Differential oil is clean.
It sounds to me like the cage of a CV joint rattling.
A girl with several metal bracelets would "Jangle" ;)
