TD Engine bay
« am: 16. September 2010, 01:09 »
Hi.
My Iltis TD (AAZ) conversion is going relativley well, however, I just wondered if anyone had a picture of the TD engine bay to see what one is meant to look like!
So far the conversion is using lots of different parts from lots of different engines!
AAZ engine.
GTD Exhaust manifold and turbo.
Audi oil filter head.
Iltis sump and pick up pipe (obviously)
AAZ windage tray.
I'm struggling to find the part number of the pipe between the air box and the turbo in ETKA.
I found the hard way that you have to grind a lump from the engine block to allow the starter motor to fit.
I would just be interested to see a real one! Also very interested in how the alternator mounts.
:)
Simon.

Anyone have the part number or a picture of the TD air intake?
I cannot find it in ETKA.

Hi Simon,

here we are: "All pipes great and small..." :)

Absolutely no number or code on it. I did not find it in ETKA, too.

Any idea where I could get one?
Classic parts do not have it listed.
Obsolete in the UK.

First of all, try to find something with the  "Suche" function (search function) and ask, if anybody has to sell one.

I read at classic parts, that they are able to remanufacture some parts, this would be the second way...

Greetings

I think i should make it more precise, not the search function (suche) in the task line. leave a note inside the "SUCHE" ("BIETE") location.

Hi Simon,

a) you could simply weld it yourself - if you are able to weld and have the equipment. Will be a lot cheaper then letting it remanufacture from Classic Parts.

b) Looking at these pictures here and comparing it to your picturese here ( http://www.iltis.co.uk/?p=130 ) - where do you attache the front hose to? The back one is the valvecap airvent. But you do not have a place to connect the front one, right?

c) Alternatively to adapting the airvents to the metal tube you might also find a hose that is kind of in an Y-shape that might fit between a tube and the air filter exit.

Cheers,
Marc

I'm sorry, I'm sot sure I understand.
I need a 180° ben from the turbo backwards, a long piece then a 30° or so bend into the airbox.
The oil breather connects into this pipe.
I could make this part, but I am struggling to find a bend of a tight enough radius to curve around and back to the turbo.
VW did it with a 90° rubber elbow and the air pipe was "J" shaped.
I only have facilities to weld steel. I can get aluminium welding done locally, but again, i cannot find off the shelf aluminium bends in 57mm to contemplate this either.
I don't want to but I fear I may end up making this parts from either silicone hose or flexible conduit

I may just use this to get the vehicle roadworthy and come back to it, it is simple to get to, it's not like I have to strip the vehicle to get to it!

Ah, I understand what you mean now.
The AAZ engine does not have the BOV (Blow Off Valve) it's a silly item and VW realised it was a problematic piece of junk and did away with it for the later engines, thankfully.
I recently bought a tool for making "beads" on the end of tube
http://shop.useful-tools.co.uk/hand-beading-tool-4-p.asp
and having another look at the pictures above I may look harder for the aluminium bend as the radius does not look that tight.
