Iltis Security.
« am: 08. November 2010, 23:17 »
okay, my project is nearing being on the road, I have awful visions of scroats simply opening the door, letting the parking brake off and watching it roll into another car (I live in the UK remember!)
I appreciate that it's not the done thing to discuss things like this where others may be watching, so if anyone could message me some good security measures I would be grateful.
I did think about a fuel cut off solenoid mounted to the chassis and operated with a key switch (but not fitted to the dash where you could simply short the terminals behind!)
I also thought of a hinged bar to lift and lock into place to jam the parking brake on, has anyone done anything like this?

do it as the army:
place a guard next to your car...?

as any other "jeep", there is no prevention from people entering your car.
this, you experience off your island mainly on veteran car shows, though..

but looking the park brake lever in place should do the thing in your nasty neighborhood.

What did the German army do?
Wasn't there a steel cable for theft prevention?
Which part of the controls was blocked with this cable?

it was to be installed through the steering wheel and the seat
there should be an image in the manual

this does not prevent cars from being pushed downhill - as common in UK :-)

Hi Baxter,
a) the main power switch called "Knochen" (= bone) is a good thing to stop "normal users" to start the car
b) replace the original Bundeswehr steering colum lock by one from Golf1 or Passat up to 32b or eqivalent. They do have the possibility to really lock the steering wheel wich the original BW one does not have. So parking somewhere downhill, be shure to turn the steering wheel all the way to the left or right and so the car can not go all the way down hill but turn. I know, not nice but better than nothing.
c) drill a hole in the hand brake lever, weld a metal piece close to it and drill a hole in the upper lever position. Use a U-shaped lock to really lock the hand brake in this position.

Regards,
Marc

A few days ago, I connected the battery and found out something else that was broken, the ignition switch.
Great.
So, the iltis now sports even more fresh parts, it now has a new ignition switch - with a steering lock! courtesy of some old T3 parts I had.
A step in the right direction.

Man könnte noch einen Gang einlegen und die Schaltung verschliessbar machen ;)

And I would like to add a very true sentence, which I learned in the USA:

I am nearing completion of the project now, my windscreen arrived today.
I am in the final throws of fitting the glow plug relay, I have the cooling system to connect and a leak on #3 injector pipe to repair.
I then thought, I have no pad locks!
So, instead of buying 3, I will buy 4.
I am then going to weld 2 tabs next to the handbrake lever, both with holes in.
Once the hand brake is applied, it will uncover the holes in the tabs to allow me to fit the pad lock, this will lock the handbrake lever in the up position.

Oh, I also have to fix the annoying problem of the horn sounding when I use main beam on the headlamps!
